The General Lee

The idea for General Lee (GL) was created from the popular Jerry Rushing’s vehicle, which was named as Lee’s favorite horse, Traveller.

The History

It is a modified version of Dodge Charger that was driven in the TV series ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’, which was famous for stunts and chases.

There isn’t any confirmed estimated numbers of models used in the show; some claim 256 vehicles and some sources say about 310 variants were used in the TV series.

From 1979 to middle 80s, early 1970 Chargers were used and later converted into GL specs. Despite getting good reviews, no other editions were used; later in the series, the organizers used ‘jump footage’ of the cars, which in turn gave much success.

The first General Lee was developed by Warner Brothers and the series was labeled as Lee1, Lee2, and Lee3, featuring 380hp V8-powered Charger’s power-train. It had light bronze metallic interior, chrome rocker trim, air conditioning, and 3 speaker dash.

Renaud and Andre built GL for Warner Brothers from second to fourth season; however, they showed some inconsistency in car making, but they did some minor changes, such as dyed brown interior.

In 1983, Warner Brothers took total control over tuning The General Lee to Ken Fritz and GL was the highlight of the show and it had received ‘n’ number of fan followers.

Engines in the television series were varied, ranging from 318hp to 440hp V8 power-trains; however, the close up Lee was 383hp powered V8 block unit. The special edition, Sky Car had lighter chassis and most of stunt cars had either 318 or 440 engine.

Lee1 was recovered out of a junkyard in 2001 by Gary Schneider and Travis Bell and since then the model has been fully ‘salvaged’ to its on screen appearance.
